Designer: Naoto Fukasawa, 2008
Manufacturer: Shachihata, Japan
Materials: Ballpoint cartridge (black ink), plastic, steel
Notes: Hanko are personal seals used by the Japanese in place of signatures for all formal transactions, be they business or private. The typical shape of a hanko is a short cylinder which can be fashioned from exotic materials or quite commonly, plastic. Shachihata, a company with nearly one hundred years experience in producing stamps and stamping materials, recently collaborated with renowned industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa in creating a range of name stamps (hanko) that synthesize the designer’s minimalist approach. For our purposes, we have chosen to offer the Shachihata ballpoint pen with stamp in an assortment of unique icons: a heart, a pointing finger, or an asterisk.
The Japanese hanko system has existed for centuries. Imported from mainland China in the first century, hanko were initially used by emperors and noblemen as a symbol of authority. In the Middle Ages, the system was adopted by samurai, who were granted exclusive usage of red ink for their seals. In the late 1800s, modernization allowed for the widespread adoption of hanko by Japanese society and today, individuals can special order or purchase readymade hanko at specialty shops throughout the country.
